Dr. Erik Palmberg may recommend an implant-supported bridge if you are missing multiple teeth. An implant-supported bridge is similar to a traditional bridge but is anchored on implant posts rather than by crowns placed on the teeth to either side of the bridge. In most cases, an implant is placed for each missing tooth and the implant crowns are connected to form one piece atop the posts; however, if an implant cannot be placed for each missing tooth, our dentist may design a bridge consisting of the prosthetic teeth suspended between two implant-supported crowns.
Implant-supported bridges are typically recommended to replace multiple teeth or when there is concern that excessive pressure may be placed on individual, unconnected implants, increasing the chances that the implant will fail. Implant-supported bridges reduce the pressure by spreading it across the entire bridge. This helps keep the implants firmly anchored in your jawbone where they can continue to improve your oral health and function.
Benefits of an implant-supported bridge include:
- A long-lasting solution for your smile and oral health
- Support for your surrounding teeth to remain in their proper positions
- A final result that looks, feels and functions like your natural teeth
- Restored oral function, including biting, chewing and speaking normally
- Preservation of your supporting bone structure
- A less expensive overall treatment
